The store has had a makeover and now boasts more retail space than ever , with a bright and interesting new interior . Holmestead is an Irish equestrian institution started in 1976 by Bill Holmes as a schoolboy in Tyrella , Co.Down where the company still has Northern Ireland’s largest retail store . The Kill Superstore opened on 1st September 1994 ( the day of the ceasefire in the North a good omen perhaps ! ) a converted hay barn and grain store just off the N7 at Blackchurch . It was revolutionary in that , it was not on the high street rather it was a destination , unheard of for saddlery in 1994 . ” There were a lot of unbelievers who thought I was mad , a hay barn down a country road somewhere near Kill . A store that would be the biggest and best retailer in Ireland , that people would travel possibly 100’s of miles to ! ” says Bill Holmes .
The store was an immediate success , offering a previously unseen range of products in a spacious environment at prices that were substantially lower than the opposition . Late night opening and a properly trained friendly and knowledgeable staff . Over the years Holmestead has served the Stars of the horse world , outfitted Kelsey Grammer , props for many movies ,Charlie Haughey , Royal Princes and many interesting characters from Ireland and abroad . Grand National winning trainers Harvey and Sue Smith are regular customers and swear by Holmestead’ s own range of horse rugs . International Showjumper John Whitaker says ” Holmestead is simply the best ” Jessica Kurten says ” Holmestead is my No. 1 ” The list of famous shoppers goes on .
Mags Heffernan the manager has been with the company for 18years a BHSII qualified instructor . “Customer service is all important ,also to have quality products that we have tested
Ourselves so that we can stand over them is vital . You need to have total faith , that what your offering the customer is right for them and their horse ” says Mags .
A nice feature of the new store is the quality coffee painstaking sourced by Mags an avid coffee drinker . It’s quality coffee whatever you fancy from cappuccino to expressos free with our compliments .
