32Red Cup next for Discussiontofollow

goodwoodDiscussiontofollow features among 133 confirmations for the £100,000 32Red Cup over six furlongs on the fifth and final day of Glorious Goodwood, Saturday, August 2.

The lightly-raced four-year-old has done nothing but improve since joining Bedfordshire handler Mike Murphy in the autumn of last year, winning four of his six starts and progressing from an initial handicap mark of 68 to a current rating of 96.

He will carry a six pound penalty at Goodwood after a head victory in a hotly-contested five-furlong heritage handicap at Ascot on July 12. The son of Elusive City, who reeled off a hat-trick of wins on the All-Weather over the winter, had previously encountered trouble in running when third in a valuable six-furlong handicap at the Curragh on June 28, beaten three quarters of a length.

Murphy reported: “The 32Red Cup is the target for Discussiontofollow after his win on Saturday. As you would expect, he was a little bit tired on Sunday but he was fine on Monday and seems to have taken the race really, really well.

“On his homework post the Curragh, we were very confident of a big run at Ascot but when we saw the draw our confidence was dented a little bit. The pace was on the stands’ side but fortunately they did not hug the rail and Shane (Kelly) was able to race with them. It worked out as well as we could have hoped.

“I think he will enjoy the quick pace of the race at Glorious Goodwood. As you saw at Ascot, he has loads of toe but he stays six furlongs so we have no problem with the distance.

“He would need good ground or quicker and that would be our main concern at the moment. The draw would be another thing to bear in mind between now and then, but we are delighted how he’s taking his racing and progressing this year.”

32Red make Discussiontofollow the 12/1 joint-second favourite alongside the Robert Cowell-trained Intrinsic, who has not been seen since scoring over the course and distance in May. The market is headed by Alben Star (10/1, Richard Fahey), who finished fourth in the Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot and filled the same position, three quarters of a length behind Discussiontofollow after an unlucky run, in the Curragh handicap won by Line Of Reason (16/1, Paul Midgley).

Other notables going forward are the lightly-raced pair of Muthmir (14/1, William Haggas) and Gamesome (16/1, Olly Stevens), plus last year’s one-two of Rex Imperator(William Haggas) and Ajjaadd (Ted Powell), both 20/1 shots with 32Red.
